NTS NAT-IE: Test Pattern, Syllabus and a 4-Week Preparation Plan
If you studied Pre-Engineering at the intermediate level and want to get into a university for engineering or computer science, you will probably need to take the NTS NAT-IE. This guide covers what the test contains and how to prepare for it in four weeks.
What is NAT-IE?
The National Aptitude Test (NAT) is conducted by the National Testing Service (NTS), and many universities use it for undergraduate admissions. NAT-IE is the version for candidates with 12 years of education in the Pre-Engineering group.
NAT-IE Test Pattern
The NAT-IE paper has 90 multiple-choice questions, divided like this:
- English: 20 questions
- Analytical Reasoning: 20 questions
- Quantitative: 20 questions
- Subject section (Physics 10, Chemistry 10, Mathematics 10): 30 questions
- Total: 90 MCQs in 120 minutes
Other points to know:
- Published guides state that there is no negative marking, so attempt every question.
- Your result stays valid for one year.
- Always check your NTS admit card and the latest NTS notice, because rules can change.
NAT-IE Syllabus
The syllabus is based on the intermediate (HSSC) Pre-Engineering curriculum.
- English: grammar, vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, sentence completion, and comprehension.
- Analytical Reasoning: pattern recognition, series, puzzles, coding-decoding, and logical deduction.
- Quantitative: arithmetic, algebra, ratios, percentages, and basic geometry.
- Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics: mainly topics from intermediate Part 1 and Part 2.
4-Week Preparation Plan
Week 1: Know the test and find your weak spots
Take one full practice test without any preparation. Note which section costs you the most marks. Then revise Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics basics.
Week 2: Build your core subjects
Spend about 2 hours each day on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with around 20 MCQs per subject. Read the solution for every mistake.
Week 3: Strengthen English, Analytical, and Quantitative
These three sections make up 60 of the 90 questions, and many students ignore them. Practise 30 to 40 MCQs a day across them, and learn the common reasoning patterns.
Week 4: Timed practice
Take full-length timed mock tests every other day. Aim to finish all 90 questions in under 110 minutes, leaving about 10 minutes to review.
Tips for Test Day
- Answer the easy questions first, then return to the harder ones.
- Don’t spend more than 90 seconds on any one question.
- Since there is no negative marking, never leave a question blank.
- Reach the test centre early and carry all the documents listed on your admit card.
